PLANNING: Production Splash

Here are our initial ideas, we came up with various ideas which evolved around the idea of J and A, which are the first letters of our names (Jessie, Amy & Alice)

We wanted to make our production splash animanted so we thought that by using some of the ideas that we already had (above) and then physically film it. We wanted to carry on with the theme of time, due to our film being about time travel. As a group we are going to use a camera and a tripod (to keep the camera steady) and film a plain white clock for a whole hour. Here is a picture of the camera filming the clock.

After filming the clock for one hour we are going to go to the macs and spead up the filming from an hour to 2-3seconds. We will then edit in 'JA TIME PRODUCTIONS'

Here is our finished production splash that we will use in the opening titles of our film:

Here is a deconstruction of the meaning from a snapshot of the prodcution splash:

Location:

Attic: Choosing our attic location:
We ruled out Jessie’s attic due to health and safety so it was a choice of mine or Amy’s.
Here is my attic:
We decided not to use mine as there is a lot of stuff that would get in the way and make the filming angles limited. It will also not be a suitable location due to space being restricted. Although we did decide that we quite liked the ladder as it is easy to use.
LOCATION: AMY'S ATTIC
Our last resort was to use Amy’s, this will be more suitable to use. Although Amy lives in the next village to our other location we can get our parents to drive us.
Entrance to Amy's attic. We have decided not to use Amy's ladder to enter the attic because it is flimsy and difficult to use, therefore we are going to use my attic's ladder but Amy's attic.

Same with my attic, there is a lot of stuff in it. To expand the area therefore more space, we will remove some of the things. We will leave a few things to make the scene more realistic.

The boxes in shown in this photo will be removed. The attic is smaller then my attic.

Here is the view looking down the ladder.

Here is a video to show the size of the attic.
Controlling this location:
-Energy saving light bulb change to ordinary to ensure light is bright to film in. (Artificial light)
-Ask everyone to get out of the house so no distractions or added noise
-move boxes out of the attic for extra room to film

LOCATION - THE LADDER (MY HOUSE)
From visiting my attic and finally Amy's attic we came to a decision to use my attic's ladder as the accessibility of our character (Emma) to the location. This might be quite difficult to construct due to the fact of continuity errors disrupting the flow of our opening sequence but overall we think it will have a better effect.

Here is the attic door to my attic; this will be our establishing shot of the film.

This angle will be used in shot 2.

This angle will be used in shot's 2/3. Again it is critical that we don't have any props in this view. When we come to film the scenes at Amy's house there will be a continuity error if we do not remove these things from this location, therefore this is very important.

This is the ladder, it is sturdy and easy to lift down which will create a smooth shot.  We will close the doors and make sure the area is tidy.

Here is the angle as if i was in the attic and looking down upon the ladder, this will be used on shot 4. Therefore we will have to ensure that no-one will walk into the shot and that the area is tidy.

LOCATION - JESSIES GARDEN
This location will only be needed for a few seconds, but we need to ensure:
-Not raining (check weather of date)
-Make sure that family members will not use the driveway to get in the way of the shot
Here is the weather forecast for Sunday the 4th (the day we will film)

Here is a picture of our chosen location at the bottom of Jessie's garden.

Props
Letter:
To make the letter look old and authentic we will get a white A4 piece of paper and soak it in tea. This will make it look old and realistic; we also want the letter to look convincing to the audience so it actually looks like Emma’s great grandma has left her a note from years ago. This mise-en-scene prop is important to get right so we may have to do it numerous times.
We decided to call our character Emma because we felt that it is an ordinary name which connotes her to be a typical ordinary teenage girl. We didn’t want a peculiar named character so settled for Emma.
The grandma’s name however we struggled on finding a name, therefore we searched some possibilities into Google.

We wanted an old fashioned name to represent her being from the past. Here are some of the names we found:
-Ethel
-Grace
-Beatrice
-Violet
-Clara
-Hazel
-Florence
-Eleanor
-Betty
In the end we decided on Violet due to its uniqueness.

Here is the letter:

Dearest Emma,
Hope this gives you a helping hand when you need it most,
Potayoe-Crawtom
Love Great Grandma Violet

As I am currently doing A-level art and did GCSE art I feel like this will help when we make the letter. Amy and Jessie are also creative which will add to the creation of this prop.

Here is an annotation of the letters wording:

Final Prop

Ring:
We wanted a ring that appears old and has that ‘Wow Factor’ which will make the audience feel intrigued to what the ring has to do with the film. We didn’t want to spend much money so we ended up finding a cheap one from Primark for £2.
Here is the ring:

PLANNING:11TH FEB 2012

Me, Amy and Jessie are beginning to feel a bit stuck about what our fantasy film storyline could be. To overcome this we thought it would be a good idea to all gather at someone’s house and develop our ideas of our storyline. We used web 2.0 technology; Twitter to confirm our meeting.

We decided to explore two different ideas and see what our target audience liked best, these are our two ideas:

Our first idea we thought about using the location of either mine or Amy’s attic. We ruled out Jessie’s house because we already knew that being in her attic would not be safe and you can’t stand up in it making it unable to film in. We decided to take pictures of the different attic locations so we could see which one would be most suitable. Controlling these locations would be easy as we are able to tell other family members to not disturb us. The attic is the main location but we also need another location for the girl to appear in, this is where we decided to use the end of Jessie’s drive. It is an overgrown pond with an island in the middle which is easily accessible (whenever it hasn’t rained).

START:  (BASIC STORYLINE) IDEA 1

1.Girl trying to find something in an attic
2.comes across a chest, opens it and finds a letter
3.she reads it and it is from an old relative
4. It reads something creepy ‘hope you have fun’ – magical?
5. She finds something in the box old pair of glasses?
6. Puts the glasses on and then transports to a forest? – Fantasy element.

Our second idea is similar to the first one but we feel is a bit random and may appeal to a younger audience instead of a wide range of ages which we are intending to do.  It may be quite difficult to film especially the beginning flash back part.

START: (BASIC STORYLINE) IDEA 2

1.Girl asleep and starts to have a flash back – remembers that her essay is due in today (school scene teacher telling class to remember)
2.suddenly she rushes around her room to get ready for school and find her essay
3. Whilst frantically getting ready she comes across a letter from an old relative
4.she reads the note and it says a creepy spell? (Magical spell)
5. The spell she reads sends her back in time/transport to another location Forest? – Fantasy element.
We asked a range of people which idea they liked best.
AGE
GENDER
PREFFERED IDEA AND REASON
16
Male
1, it seems more fantasy like and less like a ‘chic-flick’. I would want to watch the rest of the film.
21
Female
1, seems more intriguing and realistic
50
Male
1, It seems less like a chic-flick genre of film
13
Female
2, I like them both as they both seem exciting but I prefer 2 as it includes magic.
17
Female
1, I like the fact of time travel which I find interesting and I like how it can appeal to all ages.
16
Female
1, I think that the special effects would be hard to achieve in the 2nd idea, therefore I prefer the first idea better. I also like the idea of time travel and magic.

Asking our target audience has confirmed which idea we want to take forward and film.

RESEARCH: Target Audience

This is the plan for our target audience research. This plan shows what we need to complete, who will do what and the date in which it needs to be completed.

I searched on amazon.co.uk Harry Potter and the deathly hallows part 2 as this is an example of a fantasy film which is part of an 8 part franchise. I then scrolled down to see what other films people viewed. A range of films came up such as Harry potter part 1 and other fantasy films including Pirates of the Caribbean which is a 12 certificate action/adventure fantasy film. Two 15 rated films came up including The Inbetweeners Movie which is a comedy and Bridesmaids which is a romantic comedy film. Another film was the lion king which is an adventure animated comedy certified a U. Rise of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men First Class also came up and is both rated 12 and are a combination of Action, Adventure, Drama and Sci-Fi. This concludes a wide range of genres and certificates of films which have been viewed from audiences that enjoy Harry Potter, this shows this particular fantasy film to be aimed at a wide range of target audience ages.

Again I searched on Amazon another film; The Golden Compass which is rated a PG and a family, adventure fantasy film. Films related to the Golden Compass include, The Lion Witch And The Wardrobe three part franchise which is also rated a PG. Inkheart, City of Ember, The Water Horse are also family, adventure fantasy films and rated a PG. The Secret Of Moonacre is of the same genre but certified at a U. This concludes the overlap of sub-genres and that the target audience is aimed at children under the age of 12.

We asked 12 people aged 13-50 a survey to find out their opinions and views of the fantasy genre.

Here are the results to the questionnaire:

To make a more even survey to discover what our target audiences opinions we should of asked 6 males and 6 females.

For The majority of people that we asked were our age, so to get a wider range of responses we should have sent the survey to a variety of people different ages. Although 5 out of 12 were 16 we did get responses from ages 13 through to 50.

This question concludes that the audience we have chosen (which may be difficult to cater for seeing as it is a wide range of different ages and preferences) do like fantasy films.

The most favoured fantasy film was the 8 part film franchise; Harry Potter.  5 peoples favourite was Harry Potter and 2 peoples favourite was the 5 part film franchise Twilight. Both of these film franchises include mystical creatures and are set in the modern day, therefore categorised as a contemporary fantasy.

The majority of people want to see magic, or fantasy/parallel worlds. The results from the target audience feel that these two are the most important.

Influences to see a film is important as it shows why an audience would see a film. In this case their main influence is trailers. To conclude this shows that a good storyline, editing and camera work skills are important to include in a film.

6 people feel that an interesting plot  is important so we will try to include this so that the film will suit the target audience. Special effects would be difficult to include but for fantasy film to include that 'fantasy' element i feel that special effects are important. Good acting will make the film feel and look more professional therefore also and important factor.

We felt that by asking our target audience what they thought main characters should be introduced would help us to create a film that would suit the audience. No preference to whether the main characters should be introduced was answered by over half, this concludes that they don't have an opinion the whether a main character should be introduced at the beginning of the film.

This question concludes whether they actually enjoy fantasy films, the percentage of people who said no surprised me as i thought more people would enjoy fantasy films.

Do you believe fantasy films target the younger/teenaged audience? Please Explain:
Here is the wide range of responses from ages ranging from 13-50

AGREED:
-Yes, more imagination
-Younger, they are more interested in pretend things rather than adults who prefer events that could actually happen
-Yes I believe they do.
-Yes because younger people like fantasy and make believe because they have big imaginations.
-Yes, they usually have a romance element which attracts the teenage audience.
-Yes, the younger generation are more intrigued by fantasy and magic compared to the older generation.
-Yes, but can be targeted at an older audience to. My Mum and dad love harry potter!

DISAGREED:
-I think it appeals to all age groups depending on the plot and preferred genre-both really any can be accepted-all ages as fantasy films are all about fun for the family to watch.

-No old people like fantasy films to
-No, they appeal to a wide range of people not just young/teens as people may have been reading comics such as DC since they were little which will motivate older people to watch films such as Spiderman/Thor/The Avengers

This is also another print screen from another response to the questionnaire on surveymonkey.com
Below is the results to the questionnaire which I used when putting the information into pie charts.
